Earthquake Proof?
Japanese Gojunoto (five storied pagodas), have a flexible center support column called the “shinbashira”. This, paired with wooden joints, allows for a range of movement when the earth shifts. And although Japan deals with earthquakes frequently, only two Gojunoto’s have fallen as a result in the last 1,400 years.
Messengers to the gods
Up until the 1600s it was punishable by death to harm the deer at Nara, who as residents of the forest surrounding Kasuga shrine were revered as servants to the deities living there.
